SLMath (MSRI) - NAM Film Presentation: World Premiere of George Csicsery’s film Journeys of Black Mathematicians: Part 1 and Panel Discussion, organized by Tatiana Toro, MSRI/SLMath, Omayra Ortega, Sonoma State University, Johnny Houston, Elizabeth City State University, Jennifer Murawski, MSRI/SLMath, Helene Barcelo, MSRI/SLMath, Alexander Lawhorn, MSRI/SLMath, and George Csicsery, Zala Films; Saturday, 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. This documentary series (part 1 of 2) explores the contributions of pioneering African Americans in mathematics. Featuring interviews with contemporary Black American researchers and educators who discuss their experiences, struggles and accomplishments, the film surveys some innovative educational programs in math at every level from grade school through undergraduate and postdocs. At the conclusion of the screening there will be a panel discussion. Moderator and panelists to be announced.

Lewis, Vice-President, NAM; Omayra Ortega, Sonoma State University; and Aris Winger, Georgia Gwinnett College, Friday, 6:00–9:00 p.m. A cash bar reception will be held at 6:00 pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The Cox-Talbot Invited Address will be given after the dinner, 7:45-8:45 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through JMM registration.
