How to Navigate the City Safely

Ambassadors

While in San Francisco, everyone will find plenty of friendly faces ready to greet them. Meet the official “San Francisco Welcome Ambassadors”. They operate 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Welcome Ambassadors are there to offer directions, answer general questions, provide restaurant/tour recommendations. They are hospitality trained but also act as additional eyes and ears on the street to help keep them clean and safe.

In addition, meet the Union Square Alliance. From a 24/7 staffed dispatch hotline to round-the-clock cleaning staff, ambassadors, and overnight security, staff are the eyes and ears of Union Square and respond to issues in a timely manner. Participants can call member services if they would like a walking escort. Coverage area is Moscone Center to Union Square. Allow 30 minutes. To report cleaning and safety issues, contact member services at 415-781-4456.

Street Cleanliness

Street cleaning takes place in the quadrant that encompasses the convention center and all of the JMM hotels. It occurs between midnight and 7:00 a.m. daily.

Street Safety

San Francisco has one of the lowest crime rates per capita when compared to other popular convention destinations. In fact, according to a recent Safe Cities Index published by The Economist, San Francisco is the third safest city in the nation.

The City of San Francisco has dedicated a record amount of its resources to helping its neighbors in need, deterring crime, and making sure its visitors feel welcome.

See Tips for Attendees. Note that San Francisco is, in general, a safe destination; however, when visiting any city, it is important to be aware of your surroundings, including not leaving valuables or luggage visible in your car.

See safe walking maps listed below. The safest way to travel to areas outside of those routes, such as to museums or restaurants, is by a ridesharing service. Throughout the JMM, a network of ambassadors will be deployed throughout Union Square, SOMA, and the Tenderloin to provide JMM participants with an extra layer of hospitality and safety.
