JMM 2021

Request for Topics and Moderators for Networking Sessions

We recognize the importance of providing opportunities for participants in JMM 2021 to interact with each other outside of the sessions and talks that are part of the scientific program, as they would at an in-person JMM. Participants may want to share their professional and personal experiences during the pandemic, discuss current issues in the mathematical community, and just say hi to colleagues. Therefore, we are scheduling several networking sessions every day of the meeting, Wednesday – Saturday. Each session will be held via Zoom and will last 1 hour.

We invite you to suggest topics/themes for these networking sessions that will be relevant and attractive to participants. We are also seeking volunteers to moderate these sessions. For now, we are setting aside three 1-hour slots each day (Wednesday-Saturday), from noon- 1:00 pm. Here are some examples of topics and themes that are being considered:

  • Teaching during the Pandemic
  • Pursuing your Research during the Pandemic
  • Tips for First Timers at the JMM
  • Students
  • Early-Career Mathematicians
  • Mathematicians from under-represented Groups

If you would like to suggest an additional topic, please send it to us at meet@ams.org no later than Tuesday, December 1. If you are willing to serve as the moderator for a session about your topic or any of the topics listed above, please let us know. Our experience with the recent AMS Virtual Fall Sectionals demonstrated that it’s important to have a good moderator who can establish a friendly atmosphere in the networking session and encourage a lively discussion.

Thank you for your help in making the upcoming 2021 Virtual JMM a success!
